Ashley Mates
Oakland based artist, Ashley Mates began painting as a way to cope after her mother’s death. She has always been told she is overly open with her feelings so she channeled them through her paint. When she isn’t painting she is an organizer for the Labor Movement and feminist activist. Her expressive work is inspired by her desire for more women representation in art. Over the last few years, changes in her career have created more space and time to develop her artistic style and looks forward to developing as an artist.
