CREATING IN A GLOBAL WORLD
View All >>The evolution of the art market is well aligned with the world’s functions in economy, politics, business. Like everything else, it has become more global. However, this article is not about the usual “globalization of...and the use of Internet” kind of story but it will focus more on something that is often overseen:
How can globalization affect the creative process and, consequently, the artist’s business?
The world consists of various local cultures and local economies. Despite the unification that takes place today, smaller scale businesses don’t cease to exist. However, they are overshadowed by the bigger scale ones, which are the centers of money and power. The centers of economy (mostly found in the West) are the main focus for everyone that wants to sell and the same goes for the art market. Businesses thrive where the money is.
That puts a constant pressure on the artist/creator to always produce something that will be bought. That is based on hot trends, people’s taste and good marketing. This puts a constant pressure on the artist especially when their ways of creation are not aligned with the popular ideal.
Smaller asian markets or non western productions are often overseen by the big ones in large centers. Local culture’s art is often not even considered art at all because it “doesnt sell”, “doesn’t speak to many people”, “it is not fine art”, “it is not understood”.
The creative process is unique to every individual. Every individual is influenced by their culture, specific aesthetics, personal life, endless things. It is a flow of experiences embodied in a piece of artwork, now available to be seen online.
How can you take advantage of globalization?
Globalization goes hand in hand with the use of Internet. In the past it might have been impossible to speak one's truth to the world, stand out and be your unique self. Discover like minded people from any place and connect with them. Integrate yourself in communities.
Bring change.
The ability to exist with your own voice in the world and speak through your unique art is a powerful weapon that can change history and help turn page.
